The Coast Guard is now estimating the entire operation make take another two weeks to complete – depending on weather and any unforeseen variables. The barges will be used to shuttle containers back to their original onboarding facility at Seagrit Marine Terminal in Baltimore, to be offloaded there by shore-based handling gear.Īfter the ship is relieved of its containers, tugs and pull barges will try again to pull the ordinarily 42.6’ draft Ever Forward free and back into deeper water. “The containers will be removed in daylight hours only for safety purposes from both the port and starboard sides and placed on receiving barges,” the Coast Guard said. ![]() Containers will start being removed as soon as two crane barges with suitable lifting heights can be put into position. The dredges Dale Pyatt and Oyster Bay continue to work near the ship and will keep digging to a depth of 43’ according to the Coast Guard. "Salvage experts determined they would not be able to overcome the ground force of the Ever Forward in its current loaded condition,” according to the statement from the Coast Guard 5 th District. On Monday afternoon the Coast Guard announced the plan now is to first bring in barge cranes to lift containers and lighten the ship. issued a “general average” notice, alerting cargo interests they will be subject to additional costs for delivery of cargo, given the expense of the recovery operation.Īfter two unsuccessful attempts to dislodge the vessel with dredging and up to seven tugs pushing and pulling, the next backup plan whas been to employ a pair of anchored barges to apply additional pulling power to the ship. On March 31 ship operators Evergreen Marine Corp. The Coast Guard says it’s still investigating the cause of the incident. The ship was outbound from Baltimore heading down the bay to Norfolk, Va., March 13 when it strayed out of deep water and ran aground. A 500-yard safety zone around the ship remains in effect, and marine traffic can still transit the shipping channel in one direction at a time while lightering is under way.Eighteen days after it went astray in Chesapeake Bay, the 1,095’ container vessel Ever Forward remained aground near the Craighill Channel, defying the best efforts of tugboat and dredge crews to refloat the ship. The operation is expected to take about two weeks, depending upon the weather. Once the containers are removed, the salvage team will attempt to pull Ever Forward free again. As shipowner Evergreen has declared general average for the casualty, cargo owners may have to post a GA bond before they can recover any of the boxes that are returned to Seagirt. ![]() These barges will shuttle the containers back to Seagirt Marine Terminal in Baltimore - the same place where they were originally loaded onto the ship.Īccording to the Baltimore Sun, the plan calls for removing a few hundred of the 4,964 containers aboard Ever Forward, but the majority of the cargo will stay on board. The containers will be removed during daylight hours from both sides of the ship and will be lowered onto deck barges for lightering. They will continue a dredging operation to dig out around the ship to a depth of 43 feet, and they will bring in two crane barges to hoist off containers from Ever Forward's decks. The salvage team has determined that they are not able to overcome the ground force of the Ever Forward in her current loaded condition, even with half a dozen tugs and two pulling barges at their disposal, the Coast Guard said in a statement Monday. An initial assessment determined that it would be a challenging refloat operation because the vessel had driven her bow deep into the mud when she left the shipping channel. Donjon Smit was appointed to undertake the salvage, with the U.S. The 1,100-foot Ever Forward grounded on March 13 while transiting south in the Chesapeake Bay towards Norfolk, Virginia. Put simply: if you simply want to protect a device from interference (or prevent it from causing interference) then it’s enough to enclose it in a metal box but if you want something that you can experiment with, you’ll probably want a cage. Among other advantages, this allows observation of the subject inside of the cage. In comparison to a Faraday shield, the cage variant is not a solid object, but rather a metallic mesh. Faraday Cage DesignĪt the most basic level, a Faraday cage is an enclosure made of a conductive material that blocks electromagnetic fields. While it’s hardly a perfect specimen, it clearly works, and it didn’t take anything that can’t be sourced locally pretty much anywhere in the world. While it’s true that building a perfect Faraday cage for a given frequency involves math and careful attention to detail, putting together a simple model for general purpose use and experimentation turns out to be quick and easy.Īs an exercise in minimalist hacking I recently built a basic Faraday cage out of materials sourced from Home Depot, and thought it would be interesting to not only describe its construction but give some ideas as to how one can put it to practical use in the home lab. It could be that there’s a certain mystique about Faraday cages, an assumption that their construction requires techniques or materials outside the realm of the home hacker. Yet despite being such a well known device, the average hacker still doesn’t have one in their arsenal. Most Hackaday readers are no doubt familiar with the Faraday cage, at least in name, and nearly everyone owns one: if you’ve ever stood watching a bag of popcorn slowly revolve inside of a microwave, you’be seen Michael Faraday’s 1836 invention in action. Here is an article by HowToGeek exlaining how IP addresses work. Note that while IPv4 offers a limited number of addresses that can be assigned, this is not the case with IPv6. When you attempt to connect to their internet, your online activity first goes to your ISP and is immediately routed to your device via your IP address. For instance, if AT&T or COX is your ISP, they’re responsible for assigning IPs to your devices. Since ISPs provide you with access to the internet, it’s their responsibility to assign an IP address to your device. IP addresses are typically assigned to devices by an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Read more about IP addresses on Wikipedia. Whether you’re simply surfing the web, watching a video on YouTube, or booking your next holiday, IP addresses are certainly involved. IP addresses are like GPS locations for devices (including servers) on any network. Since they were first developed in the 1970s, IP addresses have evolved to define how devices interact on the internet. You could view this as a mailing address, just for your online activity. Depicting Sisyphusįrom what survives in Greek art, it seems that Sisyphus was the most popular of the sinners in the Underworld. ![]() ![]() So it’s to be expected that suffering was imagined in such futile and soul-destroying terms. Ancient Greek society was, in essence, an agricultural one, and entailed plenty of rigorous labor. Unendurable punishment was conceived not only as excruciating bodily torment (so Tityos, who had to endure having his liver being torn out by two vultures-forever), but also as unremitting drudgery. Further, Sisyphus’ fate says much about the ancient Greek mindset. Like Tityos and Tantalus, whose sufferings Odysseus also witnesses, Sisyphus was an exemplar of eternal punishment-but it’s worth noting that, in the Homeric conception of the afterlife, there’s no clearly defined zone for those destined for everlasting torment. But he would strain again and thrust it back, and the sweat flowed down from his limbs… In fact, he would get a purchase with hands and feet and keep pushing the stone toward the crest of a hill, but as often as he was about to heave it over the top, the weight would turn it back, and then down again to the plain would come rolling the shameless stone. …seeking to raise a monstrous stone with his two hands. In Homer’s account of Odysseus’s travels home from Troy, the Greek hero visits the Underworld, and sees Sisyphus among the dead: Sisyphus’s fate was deeply rooted in Greek literature. Accordingly, they imposed the punishment for which he remains known to this day: to roll a heavy rock uphill forever. Eventually, though, his time came and the gods were intent on ensuring that Sisyphus remain, quite literally, dead and buried. Remarkably, this ruse worked on Hades, and Sisyphus was able to live a while longer. So, on being taken down to the Underworld, Sisyphus could legitimately say that he wasn’t ready, and ought to be returned to the earth above in order to remonstrate with his wife. He’d persuaded his wife not to undertake the funerary rituals that were necessary for any soul to enter the afterlife. In fact, with Death rendered ineffectual, everyone on earth could stay alive.Īfter some time, Ares managed to liberate Thanatos, but Sisyphus had another trick up his sleeve. Yet this “craftiest of men” (Homer, Iliad 6.153) tied up his hunter, and thus continued living. Putting together the different tales that survive, we get this: Zeus intended to kill Sisyphus because he was miffed at him-specifically, for revealing that Zeus had abducted a young lady to said young lady’s father. So Thanatos, the personification of death, was sent to take hold of Sisyphus and transport him down to the Underworld. As ever with Greek myths, it depends on what you read,( 1) but the recurring theme is that Sisyphus’s eternal suffering came about due to his cheating Death and thereby disturbing the cosmic order. (Note: The fabric at the base is a temporary measure to guarantee stability during transport.) Sisyphus’s Sin(s)īut first of all, we should clarify what Sisyphus did wrong.
